INTRODUCTION Although the effects of unplanned species introductions are generally ecologically undesirable, the study of these effects can lead to a better understanding of the organization of biological communities (Lodge, 1993). The invasion of marine and terrestrial ecosystems by exotic species may be hindered by strong interspecific competition or predation from local species, resource availability, migration ability and other factors (Tilman, 1999; Miller et al., 2002). However, the presence of an unoccupied niche within a suitable habitat may reduce the effect of some of these hindering factors (Johnson and Carlton, 1996).
